Drawn bonnet with cane (1850’s) or wire (1860’s) hoops, tied with silk ribbons.

Spoon Bonnet, 
c. 1861-65 

This bonnet’s brim rises in a sharp angle to the face, "creating a large gap between brim and head often to be filled in with flowers and high-pleached bowers of foliage," Hats, Fiona Clark.

Dinner Hat, c.1860

Also called the Empire bonnet, this tiny bonnet was "worn on the flat of the head stopping just short of the swell of the chignon," Hats, Fiona Clark. It was the proper costume for formal occasions, especially church-going.

Boots, Glengarry Hat  & Gaiters

Boots pattern adapted from Costume in Detail. Blue cloth boots, laced on inside, leather 5/8" heel. Tongue lined with pink silk, boot lined with white cotton. Original made in Oxford.

Glengarry hat pattern adapted from Frank Leslie’s. Originals in TCS Collection. Featured hats from Genin’s Bazaar, Aug. 1863. Trimmed with plaid ribbon.

Gaiters adapted from originals of dark boxcloth (a very tight, brushed wool) that looks like thick felt. Worn over shoes to protect them. Top edge is rolled with leather piping. Leather strap beneath.

Pattern includes all three items.

Original in TCS Collection. Lovely tasselled purse with fringe, knitted with steel beads. Center opening with two metal rings that slide for closure. Lovely way to hold change and keys.
